I was in the north of Marquette visiting waterfalls and was late getting back to town for sunset. As I was driving down Lakeshore drive to the lighthouse I was watching helplessly as the lake and sky were beaming with the color as the sun was setting. At this time of year\/day typically traffic is light to none, but if there is traffic it typically moves along at 30-35mph even though the speed limit is 25 mph. Not today! Just ahead of me a late model Subaru outback pulls out of a roundabout going my way at 15-20mph. Ugh, the agony! Typically, I avoid Tahquamenon due to the sheer volume of people. I had never been in the winter and didn’t know what to expect, I other than an absence of crowds. I decided to take a chance and have an adventure, I headed for Trout Lake, MI for the night, and it was a very cold night.  The next morning as I made my way to the falls it was around -18F. Due to the low temperature the atmosphere was very thick and soupy from the ground all the way up. The steps were covered in smooth ice from the spray from the falls. There was no traction to speak of, and I didn’t have any ice cleats. After I got down to the bottom the clouds started to break apart. I was wearing my waders so into the river I went for a different perspective than most. It was mostly clear but there was haziness in the atmosphere as the morning fog hadn’t quite lifted. I could see the sun hidden below the tree line; I set up the tripod and composed the shot with the falls in full shade. I decided to wait around for the sun to rise enough for the light to clear the trees. I had a hunch that the light would come down over the face of the falls. About an hour later the sunlight was still being filtered by just a bit of morning hazy that remained as it spilled over the top of the tree line and began to light up the water. The water gradually started to glow, like a dimmer switch had been turned on and was slowly starting to be turned up. Fish cover is located in a remote location on the southern edge of the Keweenaw Peninsula; it is also the beginning of the hike to Montreal Falls. I got to the shore around 1o'clock that day and was greeted by a very stiff south wind, probably 15-20mph gusting into the 30's. The sky was mostly to partly cloudy, and Lake Superior was very rough with swells that were easily 10ft+. After doing some scouting and taking some test shots, I decided where I wanted to be at sunset. I spent the next four hours doing some reading and in prayer. The time eventually came for me to head to the location I chose for sunset. As I composed my shot, I watched the dark clouds appear on the horizon. As I waited for sunset the dark clouds were headed straight for me. About 20 minutes before sunset the first raindrops of the day began to fall. My perch was completely exposed and so I had no choice but to put my lens cloth over top of my camera and wait it out. Luckly it was a very brief and light shower, lasting just long enough to wet the rocks yielding much more saturation and contract than I had just moments before.
